486 to go

Latest to go on the unsub: Steven Johnson's weblog, which has of late become less and less interesting and more and more self-advertisement. I expect a certain amount of self-promo when you've just published a book, but his blog has just basically turned into itineraries and press clippings, and was headed that way even before the Ghost Map came out. Another sigh of relief.

The long blackout

The Blog | Bill Maher: New Rule: We Don't Need Drug Tests for Librarians | The Huffington Post
Via Unalog.

The last time a librarian did something really stupid and reckless on drugs was when Laura married George.

How Many of Me - Census Search
According to this site, there are 0 people in the US with my name. Which is making me wonder where I've been all this time.

not-Mac

New .Mac webmail Not Enough Reason to Stay (for me, anyway) - O'Reilly Mac DevCenter Blog

Apple is promoting the new .Mac webmail. But, I don’t think it is enough to convince me to spend $100 (or $80 through Amazon) to renew my subscription. So, like others in this blog and elsewhere, I think I will vote with my wallet and leave.

I just let my .Mac membership lapse as well. I had gotten a couple notices about it and was about to just reflexively renew, when I thought about it for a moment and realized that I never use it except to send eCards, which I can do without a membership. The only mail I ever got there was promo stuff from Apple, I never think to use the iDisk, and Backup has nothing on SuperDuper. There's $99 or however much saved. I just switched the few things that did use that address to my gmail account.

Sweet freedom

I just unsubscribed from Boing Boing. I'm actually kind of surprised at the relief I felt.

Class whorefare

Not like the 70s (kottke.org)

Doesn't help that ..[Friedman's].. stuff is behind the NY Times paywall. If he really wanted to make the impact on this green stuff, he'd get the Times to move that stuff out in the open so us proles can link to it and discuss it.

I am sure that PopTech is just awash with the proletariat, none of whom could possibly pony up for TimesSelect.

How to get into the NY Times.

Scripting News: 10/18/2006

Back to sources having blogs, I'd consider hosting those blogs. This is an idea I've pitched to Martin Nisenholtz at the NY Times, first in 2002, and a couple of times since. How it would work -- when a person is quoted in a Times piece, a few days after the article runs, a person from the publishing side contacts them, congratulates them on being quoted in the Times, and asks if they want a blog. No strings attached, you can say anything you want on your blog, no editorial review, and no cost to you.

Ah-HA. I bet he'd start taking a lot more reporters' calls then.

Ever notice that the only industry not in need of disintermediation is technology?

All sizzle and no steak, so to speak

I know I'm in peril of being thought of as some kind of culinary Ted Nugent.

Actually, I think of Bourdain more as a culinary Vanilla Ice.

Harvesting the euphemisms

The Ethicurean: Chew the right thing. » Blog Archive » A visit to Clark Summit Farm in Tomales, CA

The chickens are raised and harvested using Joel Salatin’s popular methods, then she lets the carcasses sit for two days on ice; her buyers must come to the farm promptly to pick them up.

"Harvest" is such a lovely word; I wish that the "humane slaughter" types would just stick to "killed" or "slaughtered," (as, admittedly, they do later in the post.) You harvest vegetables. You kill chickens. "Harvest" is just another euphemism. Though I still don't get oohing over how sweet and cute and civilized the pigs are (they actually only shit in a corner! Isn't that amazing! It's like they're sentient! Where's my grassfed locally harvested pork?) while also wanting to eat them. Pollan's book has made it possible for people to feel like they don't need to actually see the animal slaughtered; they read about Pollan seeing it, so that's good enough for them.
